Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
February 8, 2003
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Strictly Sails

The last few days have been consistently warm with the exception of quick cold mornings. But today, Saturday, a small front came through blowing from the NNW. I have to admit I was a little worried about the bites. We set up shallow and drifted out. We finally reached the meat zone and within a few minutes Triggerfish hit the downline and a Sailfish picked up the flat line. Again, he hit like a freight train taking more than 300 yards of mono jumping the whole time. Then he jumped himself off. Less than an hour later, I decided to have some fun and put out the kite. I was reluctant at first because the kite baits have not been doing it lately. After continues adjustments as usual for the kite baits, I saw a Sailfish light up and zoom in on the bait. It wasn't aggressive, but rather like a dog picking up a bone and walking away with it. We all waited for him to make the next move. The kite marker moved slowly to the right and then the fish jumped before he could pop the clip. Its amazing that these fish are that sensitive as the clip holds only about 1 pound of tension. But that was enough to stick the hook. For the next hour and 15 minutes Don (from North Carolina) fought this stubborn sailfish and brought him boatside a dozen times only for him to switch direction on us and swim off. Finally I was able to grab the leader, but this fish was still stubborn, I had to let go a few times. When I finally was able to hold on the fish broke off. Sad but true. As Don fought this fish a free jumper came as close as 50 feet from us and jumped at least twice. We thought it was our Sail but he was much to deep at the time. Other than that, no more bites. We stopped at 11:30 Am. Till next tide, Captain Cary Hanna
