Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
March 2, 2003
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's a shark, it's a Tuna, no it's a foul hooked Sailfish!

Being one of the first boats on the water has it's advantages, especially when it's the weekend. We headed out on Saturday morning at 7am, got our baits and were fishing 4 miles south of the inlet by 7:30am. Kingfish were first on the menu, screaming drags left and right for the first hour. Boats were all around us by this time but we still manauvered well. Then came a massive strike on the flat line bait and stripped over 300 yards off the spool before he stopped, or actually before I had to start the boat and go after this fish just so we can put some line back on the reel. I had about 5 pounds of drag on this reel already but decided to increase the drag since this fish wasn't going to stop for nobody. Each time we caught up to the fish and stopped the boat line kept on stripping off the reel, we had to do almost 5 knots just to keep up on him. The fish never jumped or came close to the surface for over an hour. All bets were on some kind of Shark, but then the fish was doing circles around us and we thought maybe it was a big Tuna. We had 3 big dudes fighting this stubborn fish for 1 and a 1/2 hours before we got a glimpse of a large Sailfish foul hooked in the middle of his back. This fish took us from 110 feet of water to the 550 foot depths and 3 miles north of our spot. On our next drift we found another bite from the same flat line bait and jumped off another big Sail. On the afternoon trip I worked as hard as ever to produce a bite but came up with nothing for my clients. We did get some good visuals. A free jumping Sailfish and the best was a huge Kingfish literally skyrocket the kite bait in 50 feet of water. He jumped out at least 10 feet from the water 2 times and never came back for the bait he just tramatized. The right moon phase is coming up for the next 2 weeks on the swordfish bite. Lets go Swordin!

Till next tide, Captain Cary Hanna
