Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Gladiators of the Sea
We headed offshore Saturday night, 3-8-03, in search for Swords. It was one of the calmest of nights I've been out since last summer with South winds at less than 5 knots. Locals Peter, Jarred and Christie were on the boat to get some real rod bending action and they sure did. We started close to the 50 / 50 lines and put out Squids, Speedos, and Blue Runners. We got our first strike and Peter was up first to battle. He brought him boatside in about 20 minutes, as we grabbed the leader I could see the hook was only pinched on his bill and it worked loose. A beautiful Swordfish estimated at 80 pounds just swam off slowly. We set out the lines again and within 20 minutes I caught a glimpse of a glow stick surfacing, but no rods were giving it away. We finally narrowed down which rod it was and it was Jarred's turn to do battle. About 30 minutes later we had a Swordfish hooked in the corner of his mouth at boatside. This fish went nuts and so did everyone on board. We stuck the gaff to this 80 plus pound Swordy. We had one more strike but missed him due to striking him to fast. The right moon phase is here and I have an available boat, Let's get Swordy!
Till next Tide,
Captain Cary Hanna
