Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing the Shelf
When is this unstable weather coming to an end? You really can't depend on the weather reports as storms seem to form as they please. On Friday night I was a bit worried as South to south west winds blew hard then stopped on and off. Don Stacks from Sailfish Real Estate Investments booked the boat for the evening to go swordfishing with 3 of his buddies. We had a great time catching bait as my spot was loaded with Speedos and rainbow runners. It was great fun on 6 pound line with lightweight bass rods. As we headed out to the '120s' the winds laid down to a dead calm and the sea invited us to cross, it has been a while since I have been on almost full throttle going out to the Sword grounds. I said to myself, tonight is going to be the night, perfect conditions and the current was pushing us at 3.5 knots heading 2 degrees true, basically straight north. We set up our lines and watched the color depthfinder read bottom at 1,400 + feet showing all the drop-offs. At times we were in 1000 feet and then the bottom would drop over 150 feet. The moon never came up for us that night. It was on schedule to rise about 1:00 am but we fished until 12:30am and never got a bite. It was a disapointment but we had a great adventure, catching a Sword would have been the icing on the cake. The moon phase I choose best is coming up and I hope the weather will let us through.
Till Next Tide,
Captain Cary Hanna
