Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
May 4, 2004
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Way fishing should be

Conditions are playing a big roll in the bite right now. We are in and out of heavy winds and rain and some beautiful sunny days as well. During the air and sea show the winds were blowing hard out of the east and the Mahi-Mahi were almost everywhere. Live baits were the ticket, on the kites, freelined and on downriggers. The Goggle eyes were the perfect size baits for the bigger fish. Nice size Blackfin Tuna are coming in the spread up to 33 pounds so far. We caught huge Amberjacks up to 45 pounds on the bottom as we were fishing for Sharks. A nice Hammerhead come up in our spread and attacked the kite bait, he must have been 10 feet long and over 300 pounds. He chewed through the wire leader in less than 30 seconds. Last week a boat reported seeing a school of Bluefin Tuna the size of a refridgerator attack a school of baitfish within 20 feet off his transom, that would be amazing to catch. I'll be bringing out the 50 wides just in case for the rest of the month. Last weekend we made a trip out Swordfishing. The conditions were not favorable but we decided to give it a shot anyways. We did catch one fish as we saw the center jug swimmming south of the rest, we got tight and boated a small 60 pounder. Sailfish are starting to show up again in better numbers than last month and the pods should be coming through more frequently now. Kingfish are back around and can be alot of fun as they make those locomotive short runs. Next report I hope to be talking about the big Bluefin Tuna we caught.

Till next Tide,

Captain Cary Hanna
