Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
April 14, 2005
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Springtime Baby

Find your window of opportunity and come on out on the water. Anything can happen the days of Spring. You never know what is going to bite on those live baits. One day the Sailfish are biting well, the next day the Kingfish are more abundant with some being caught over 30 pounds. There was a report of one crew catching a 63 pounder to the south of us.

There have also been a few yellowfin Tuna being caught, I heard of one that went over 60 pounds last weekend. Also some larger Dolphin have showed up with a few around the 30 pound range. These are definately trophy fish.

Another fish coming our way is the Blackfin Tuna. They start showing up in good numbers by the end of the month topping the scales at 35 pounds of pure muscle.

If you really want a back workout there are plenty of Sharks to go around. Within the past week I had to get the boat started just so we could put line back on the reel. I watched on this occasion as the flat line bait got hit and just tore line off the spool. I waited for it to slow down but it never happened. I got the other rods reeled in as fast as I could and left the kite baits out. I started up the boat and made chase dragging the kite baits behind us. A few minutes into the chase I look back and see the long kite bait getting attacked by a Bull shark. We tried to get to it in time but the Shark had put his teeth into it and we had a double header of sharks. We winded up losing them both as these Sharks have so much energy it's nothing for them to take 4-500 yards of line without stopping. If you want to target these Sharks you can let me know ahead of time and I can bring the right gear to get these fellas to the boat.

The Swordfish bite has been hit and miss for us. We put a few anglers on fish but they had to be released. On one occasion we made the trip out as the forcast said 10-15 knot northeast winds. As the daylight faded the winds increased to 15-25 knots and we had to come in early as the seas were building to 10 feet.

I'm sorry for the delay in reports but the past month has been so busy for the charter fleet. With Spring break around we were accomadating everyone and there moms fishing 2-3 times a day and a few nights as well. The boat traffic seems to have slowed down quite a bit, just in time to get focused and put energys into catching some trophy fish.

Till Next Tide,

Captain Cary Hanna
