Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week in fishing

This entire week has been great fishing. We had quite a bit of different species on a single trip. The past weeks success was attributed to last weekends cold front, if you remember we had 10-12 foot seas all during the weekend with the SKA fishing tournament cancelled. That cold front, probably one of the last for the year gave a good push as alot of good fish showed up.

Tuesday was our first day out and we had a blast catching plenty of the bigger Dolphin, and Kingfish. If you were one of the boats to the north of the port you were catching Dolphin up to 30 pounds as you were the first to intercept them as they headed south.

Wednesday was awsome as well as we continued good catches of Dolphin not as big as Tuesdays. We also had some nice Kingfish up to 15 pounds and we got thick into some fat Bonitos averaging 20 pounds. At one point we had 4 lines go off one after the other. As 1 line ripped off the reel I quickly reeled in the down line and it got nailed on the way up, 2 fish on. I handed it to the 2nd angler and watched both of them fight there fish. Then the bow line goes off and I grabbed the line and kept tight until the first angler had his fish to the boat. We swapped rods and I released a fat Bonito. Then the kite line goes off and I tried to set up and pulled the hook. I put the rod on the bow and helped angler # 2 get his fish to the boat. Angler # 1 was still on his fish, a good one. Angler # 2 gets his fish to the boat and it's another bomber Bonito. As I'm getting the fish off the hook I see the kite rod I put on the bow bend over and I watched a Dolphin flop about 40 yards off the bow. I told angler # 2 if he was ready for another fish, he said "not yet". I said well there's a Dolphin stuck on the bow rod when your ready. He quickly forgot about his exaustion and grabbed the rod. Angler # 1 finally got his fish to the boat and we gaffed a nice Kingfish. Then the Dolphin came boatside and we got him in the boat pushing 15 pounds. 4 fish on and all to the boat. I live for those adrenaline pumped moments. Later on we decided to do some slow trolling and another funny story unfolded...

I set out 3 lines all with Goggle eyes. One of the baits was double hooked with a stinger in his back. I always let the lines out with the clicker off and this one in particular with the stinger, I forgot to put the clicker back on. This rod was one of my stouter rods without much bend to it. I use it as my deep rod. We trolled out to 350 feet and started coming back in when I realized time was up and we needed to get back to the dock. As I stopped the boat, we all grabbed a rod to reel in and I grabbed the rod with the stinger hook. I felt a lot of weight on it so I kept the pressure on the rod and up comes a jumping Sailfish stuck on it. I never knew he was on because I forgot to put the clicker on. Needless to say we were over 20 minutes late coming back to the docks. It's always nice to get that nice fish the last minute of the trip.

On Tuesday night we headed out with my barber Jorge once again this time on a Swordfishing trip. last month I took him out we had caught 4 Sailfish, a Kingfish next to 50 pounds and a 20 pound Kingfish. So now he wanted to mess with the big boys and catch a Sword. As I deployed the lines I was on line # 3 and the the first rod is going off. I set up on the fish and we pulled the hook prematurely. Not 1 minute later the 2nd rod goes off with line just rolling off the spool. I set up on this fish and we were on. Jorge grabbed the rod, stuck it in the harness and began his battle. Within 15 minutes this fish put a whipping on him and his cousin took over and finished it up. As we got this fish boatside he was wild and was swinging his bill every which way. We got him forcefully subdued and even on the deck he was trying to take swings. A great battle and a great fish weighing over 120 pounds.

We headed out on Thursday morning and everything calmed down. The ocean was flat calm and there was no current. We managed a Kingfish and 3 smaller Dolphin fish. A very hard day finding fish for us. We are off to the Sword grounds again tonight looking for that elusive 300 pounder.

Spring is on it's way and so is the Blackfin Tuna, one of my personal favorites. These fish can be caught in the early morning hours and also in the sunset hours. I will be settting up trips from 4pm until 8:30 pm for this occasion. Call me anytime for reservations.

Till Next Tide,
