Fishing Report for Ft. Lauderdale & Port Everglades

Capt. Cary Hanna
April 26, 2006
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Springtime baby!

The annual spring run of fish is my personal favorite time to get on the water. Everyday is different pushing through new and larger species. In the past week 3 out of 4 trips produced very good quality catches. Early in the week the seas were consistantly flat and we were catching Sailfish in the 80 -90 pound range, much bigger than our winter fish. Will Crawford had fought a Sailfish that took a bait not 30 feet from the boat and continued battling this guy for 1 hour straight. This was one stubborn fish, he was fighting him on a spinner rod loaded with 25 pound test and the drag was around 7 pounds. We were able to get picture shots of this fish the entire fight as our Sailfish didn't want any part of coming close to the boat, getting airborn right down to the last 5 minutes. The sad news is our fish died even after I was bent over the gunnel for at least 20-30 minutes trying to revive him. Will drove the boat for me as I tried to get water through the gills but he never made it. The only option we had was to boat the Sailfish. We made plans to bring it to the smokehouse where he was weighed in at 88 pounds.

Another great day was with Ken Evola and his 2 young boys at 5 and 8 years old. The seas kicked up for us at 3-5 feet. It was a little sporty but we were getting hard strikes on every drift. We winded up with 3 Kingfish and quite a few losses. One fish weighed nearly 40 pounds and the others were 30 and 20. We had a Sailfish come up on our bait with his Sail up circling around but he never ate. That was a great view for all of us as we anticipated the bite.

Another great fish coming through our waters now is the Blackfin Tuna. These fish range from 25 to over 35 pounds and are some serious fighting fish. Most are taken from the surface either on kite baits or top water baits like Pilchards. I have caught a few down deep on goggle eyes. When they hit a deep rod be ready boy, because they can double that rod over so hard you won't be able to get it out of the rod holder. These Tuna show up as quick as they are gone so start fishing them now and say those Tuna prayers.

Till Next Tide,

Captain Cary Hanna
