Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Roydhouse
January 16, 2001
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather has been all but dependable. We went through the longest stretch of cold weather that I can remember in the 20 years I've been here.

This is making the fishing very unpredictable. I get calls everyday asking how the fishing has been lately and I find myself trying to find words to explain the action without making it sound terrible after a slow day, or making it sound unreal after a great one. Basically it is a flip of a coin, like most fishing is. Inshore the mullet are still hanging out and if you can set around them you'll have a shot at the tarpon. With the shrimp running I am getting a pick at some real big boys at the bait shop. This is a shure way to bend a rod. The jack crevalles are cruising the canals beating up on the small baitfish that are coming through the inlet. The inlet is full of small grouper, sheephead and lots of snapper for those looking to bounch the bottom and keep busy.

The action changes daily and sometimes hourly so if you ask what's happened lately you'll get a wide range of answers. Give it a try so you can be there when the bite is hot.

Sea Ya,

Captain Ron Mallet
