Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Andy Roydhouse

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring has sprung. Along with the time change we are getting the fruits of the migration. Getting up seemed a bit tougher this week since I already push it at 5am. The benefit pays off though once I make it to the boat and the sun is just starting to show. You always feel you have an edge starting your fishing day early, although the experienced anglers know that it often doesn't help. Sometimes the best bite happens at noon anyways.

There has been lots of mullet in the canals at times during the last few weeks. I notice the bruiser Jacks circling them and busting in for a meal once in a while. Speaking of Jack Crevalles this is the time of year when the huge ones head north past our inlet. I caught a few this week that went over 30 pounds. You'll get the more common size of 4 to 8 pounds fishing in the canals, especially if you fish early on a moving tide. The Tarpon have been active too. I see lots of them hanging around the 17th Street bridge project, despite the noise and construction. True city fish. They are a bit spooky during the day but I get reports of the evening bite being better.

Most of my action is happening outside the inlet. This is the time of year that good things happen. We caught a 50 pound Cobia, a 55+ pound Kingfish, lots of Dolphin and quite a good amount of Sailfish recently. The next few months are my favorite time of year to be a mile or two offshore soaking a few live baits.

Sea Ya,

Captain Ron Mallet
