Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report 9/17-9/23 Fort Lauderdale to Jupiter to Ponce Inlet

Fishing continues to be hot for kingfish, sailfish, and dolphin. We have had a low pressure/tropical wave sitting off to our NE for the past week and has kept the wind out of the East for the most part. The wind has pushed some dolphin in and organized some weed lines offshore. Yesterday we had 7 dolphin from 5-15lbs., kingfish in the 10lb range, and two sailfish. All on live bait on the reef from 200-100ft, using kites and one sail coming off a bait ball. Other boats trolling on the reef caught the kingfish really well with some having up to 15 fish. The fishing should continue to get better as the fall rolls in and the mullet start to get a lot thicker.

On Saturday there was a daytime Swordfish tournament the first in the area and there was some really nice catches. At one point 9 of 13 boats in the tournament were hooked up, but in the end only 5 fish were weighed to my knowledge. The winning boat weighed a 370 and 340lb swords to win which are giant fish for the area. The fisherie is a midday/afternoon fisherie and takes place using electric reels off of Fort Lauderdale and dropping down 1500 to 2000 feet deep, which is why they are using electric. If you want to give this a try give me a call as it is pretty exciting to see this giant fish up close in the daytime.

I also had the opportunity to fish Ponce Inlet with my brother Corey this week. Every year around this time the Redfish stack up in the inlets getting ready to spawn. We fished friday from 4 to 6 and caught 6 reds from 25" to 35"...no really big giants but some great acton on light tackle. This fish can be targeted in all the inlets from Maryport to Sebastian and south, they just show up later the farther south.
