Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
In my last report I mentioned the cold weather was coming to town. Well, we did get the cold weather, but we didn't get that north current I was hoping for. Regardless, the changes did improve the sailfish bite.
Recently, we had first time saltwater anglers Pascal, and his friend Mario, join us for a morning trip. Before we left the inlet, we bought live pilchards and goggle eyes and headed north of Port Everglades inlet in Fort Lauderdale. We setup in 130' with 2 goggle eyes on the kite, a pilchard down deep and another flat lined goggle eye. We had a good north wind and cold weather, and although we didn't have a north current, I was still very positive about catching sailfish.
It took a while to get our first bite, but I told my guest to be patient. l told them the tide going to change soon and the last 2 hours was going to be better - and that's exactly what happened. The first bite was on the kite and it was a 10 pound mahi, and we missed another one on a flat line. With not much action on the kite, I put it away and concentrated on just the deep bait and the flat line so I could move around easier and cover more ground. We had actually seen sailfish swimming by our boat, but we could not get them to eat the kite baits, so I to try something different and it paid off. Pascal caught and released his first 2 sailfish and he was very proud!
In our last couple trips here in Fort Lauderdale, the weather has been really nice, around 75 to 80 degrees, but fishing on the reef has been pretty slow. Yesterday, we started on the reef but could not get a bite, so we headed offshore and caught 8 mahi. Not big ones, but good action for about an hour for Erick and Richard.
In the afternoon, we had 10-year-old Sebastian and 12-year-old Anthony. My plan was easy, go offshore and try to find some mahi with 2 young boys on the boat. I was hoping for many small fish, but instead, only found 3 nice mahi up to 20 lbs., and a skipjack. The task was harder, but the young boys were up to the challenge and did a great job!
