Sailfish, Sailfish, Sailfish

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

The sailfish bite is on! Lots of action on sailfish this week. December and January are sailfish season here in Fort Lauderdale and this year the action is excellent. We're catching them in 120-180ft of water, just a mile off the coast of Ft Lauderdale beaches. This area is known as 'Sailfish Alley'. Kite fishing and trolling are the techniques that have the best chances at yielding a sailfish. Cold fronts have been almost non-existent this year, the temps are still in the 80's. Chilly weather gets the sailfish lit up, so if a cold front ever does wander through, the sailfish numbers will climb like the stock market after election day. We're still seeing good action on them, catching an average of 1-2 per day on most days.

Swordfish are starting to bite offshore. We've only had 2 swordfish trips this week, but we caught one nice one on one charter and missed another one (a monster) on our other charter. 2 swordfish on in 2 trips (1 in the boat) is an excellent ratio when talking about swordfishing. We had the one we missed on the line for over 45 minutes before pulling the hooks on him. It was a crazy fight where the fish would come easy for 5 minutes and then take a 5 minute run. Although we never got a look at him, it was probably a 300+ pound fish. The big ones always fight strangely. January is when the swordfishing gets really good. We also hit some dolphin fish on the way out to swordfish territory.

Big game fishing is getting good out here in Fort Lauderdale. Some of the biggest billfish of the year will be caught over the next couple months. Winter fishing is not for the weak of heart as the ocean tends to be a bit rougher than the rest of the year, but the reward is worth it. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it. Good luck to everyone fishing with us this month. Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
