Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The sailfish action is heating up in Ft Lauderdale. Sailfish started biting good this week in 150-180ft of water, on the blue/green color change. The bite is best using the kite fishing technique, live goggle eyes or mullet out of the kite are working best. Yesterday, we went 5 for 7 on sailfish, which was the best day this week but we've had a few other days this week when we've caught 3 or 4 sailfish. December is generally the peak month of sailfishing in south Florida. With the gulfstream only a mile offshore Fort Lauderdale beach, it only takes a few minutes to get out to fishing grounds so you can potentially catch a sailfish within 20 minutes of leaving the dock.
Sharks are starting to get active this week as well. A few hammerheads are swimming through. A few bull sharks and dusky sharks were also caught this week. Last week we caught a huge mako shark, which is very rare for Ft Lauderdale. We haven't had any swordfish trips this week so nothing to report for them other than we've heard a few being caught by the commercial fishing boats going out daytime swordfishing from them. There is usually a good mahi-mahi bite that happens in December if the wind comes up strong out of the east. Watch the weather and if you see a strong east wind coming through, that's your best day to go dolphin fishing. Good luck and tight lines to everyone fishing this week.
