Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The reefs have slowed over the past couple of weeks. Early has been best from Fort Lauderdale to Boynton Beach the Kingfish have been numerous though most have been on the smaller side. As it warms throughout the day the bonitas have been around in huge numbers.
After we have gotten our fill of bonitas we have been heading offshore and having good luck with the dolphin. Fish in the 10-20lb. range have bee common and we have caught fish up to 30+lbs. in the last week. Most of the fish have come from under debris and a few under birds and no debris. Most of our dolphin action has been on live bait slow trolled around debris. As we run around looking for them the schools of small blackfins have been scattered around offshore and can be caught with relatie ease. Trolling small feather and casting butterfly style jigs have been the best bet for the blackfins.
On the bottom the snappers are present for those who have the patience to anchor up and work them. We have been having good luck on the yellotails and muttons on the reefs from 100-140 feet of water. On the wrecks anything has been possible...amberjacks/almacos, groupers, snappers, cobia, african pompanos, and kingfish have all been caught off of the wrecks if you can find which ones they are holing on.
Swordfishing has picked up recently with a good amount of daytime fish being caught as well as a good amount of nighttime fish around for those who want to beat the heat. Again the daytime has held the bigger fish though you always have a shot at big fish at night. Best bet for bites at night has been live baits.
We ran one trip to the bahamas a week ago and found the tunas and dolphin. The bite was off according to the other boats fishing there but if you put in your time and have the ability to move around there is plenty of fish to go around. I only heard of a few marlin sightings while there but that can change every few days.
