Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
We received a call from Mr. Walsh for a last minute summer's end Ft. Lauderdale fishing trip with his wife Maria, son Grant, and his friends Danny and Luke. Our books were basically filled and we discussed scheduling a week out if that was at all possible and John checked back in shortly and the date was reserved.
The nice morning weather that we have been experiencing lately didn't disappoint and the Walsh family and their guests headed out the inlet in comfortable sea conditions with a sunny day already underway. Captain Tommy Kopper and 1st mate Brian began the trip in 90 feet of water just off the Port Everglades #1 Sea Buoy which is anchored about a mile off the beach.
Kingfish and Bonito today on this charter. Certainly not a banner fishing day offshore off Ft. Lauderdale as fishing was on the slow side, but Capt. Kopper worked edges persistently and Brian tried different color combos on the deeper planer lines as well as the surface baits working hard for the bites, and the fish of the day, a super sized Blackfin Tuna, hit the deck of the Marlin My Darlin. Beautiful fat fish that ate a Seawitch Bonito strip combo on the short planer line fished about 200 feet out behind the boat and down about 45 feet below the surface. Bragging sized Blackfin anywhere.
As you can see there are still Tunas around, but most considerably smaller than this one. Kings inside of all sizes and Bonito mixed in and mostly in the 5 to 7 pound range. Our catch rate fluctuates during the week. Some nice catches but the fishing was actually consistently better when it rained almost every day. Good Wahoo are around and eating the Bonito but they are not an everyday catch. A Sail here and there mostly just off the edge and inside of 300 feet of water.
