Swords and Sails

Capt. Ryan McBride
October 7, 2009
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Swordfishing has been the most consistent fishery over the past few weeks. Daytime the fishing has been really good with most fish in the 100-200lb. range and multiple bites a day. As with most daytime drops some days we have been hooking most bites and the next it has been a big 0 for ?. It can be exciting one hour and the next nothing but frustration but the fun can't be beat with a big one on the line.
At night the fish have been on the smaller side, but we did catch a mid hundred pound fish on the last trip at night. There has been a good amount of dolphin swimming through the lights to keep you entertained between bites.
Offshore the dolphin have been good. This full moon we are having now mixed with some west wind has slowed it down over the past few days but should improve as we get away from the full moon. Last year we had really good dolphin fishing through the beginning of Nov. so hopefully they will remain for a few weeks.
On the reef we have been averaging one sail every trip, which is early in the season. Last year we didn't have much till Nov, so hopefully it will continue through the season. The kingfish have been on the smaller side but we should have more as the mullet continue to migrate through. Also small blackfins, bonitas, a few wahoos, cudas and sharks remain on the reef.
On the beaches if you can find the right school of mullet the tarpon, snook, jacks, and sharks are devouring the mullet. It can be non stop action for hours if the predators are in a feeding mood. Sometimes there is just too much other activity with all the bait to make them bite well but every other school coming down the coast has been non stop action.
Its a great time to fish and the weather has been mostly mild, give us a call if you would like to give it a shot.
