Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The wahoo and tuna bite is getting hot in Fort Lauderdale this month. Lots of blackfin tunas are schooling up on the reef and busting baits on the surface. Most of the tunas are small to medium sized ones, but there are a few big ones mixed in too. They like to get a big bunch of baitfish balled up and they force them to the surface. Once there, they can charge in one fish at a time, eat a couple and keep the baits all balled up in a defensive tornado. It makes for quite the feeding frenzy. We like to troll the outskirts of the school so we don't spook the bait ball. This way, we can pick at the tunas for quite a while until they fade off.
February is wahoo month here in Fort Lauderdale. Wahoo love the outside edge of the reef and hunt there on the outgoing tide. On the incoming tide, they hunt along the inside edge of the reef. The absolute best time to fish for wahoo is during the full moon. The full moon creates the largest tidal change, which makes the wahoo bite hot. This week we've caught some very nice wahoo. Feburary is usually pretty good for them.
Mahi-mahi are another migrating gamefish that we catch a lot of this time of year. They bite very good on an East wind, the stronger the better. Mahi are a local favorite because they are so good eating. Also, they school up so you can catch a lot of them at once when you find a school. As we get later into February and into March, the dolphin fish bite more and more prevalent.
It's good fishing this month. If you are looking to get out to catch some of these nice pelagic fish, give us a call at 754-214-7863. We'd love to take you fishing.
