Backbay Slams Reds, Snook, Trout, Tarpon

Capt. Ron Kowalyk
July 10, 2014
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Backbay: The bays on the southern end of our region clear up nicely. Water was whiskey and soda clear and the bite has responded with the better conditions. Crews reported excellent redfish bites and uptake in trout action and lots of mixed size, mostly juvie snook. My crews found some nice upper slot reds and juvie snook on the Eastern Wall of Estero Bay. Most of the docks and deadfall are holding snook, snappers and reds. Night fighters got as much as they came for and reported good numbers of out a season liners eating Gulps, DOA shrimp and other soft plastics; if you really wanta cheat em, use freelined live shrimp, Good Stuff!

The action was hot and heavy with mid -morning air temps reaching 87-90, on Charlotte Harbor and the northern end of Pine Inland and Matlacha. Countering that hot weather was excellent redfish action on Burnt Store Bars and in Bull and Turtle bays; I guess its well worth it! Frozen stinky shrimp, cut ladies and whatever pinfish you could find made up some easy Homeboy offerings. The whitebait mystery continued in Estero and Pine Island but crews found other options worked just as well; good for lazy old timey guys like me "more fishing less, fooling around". There was a short morning bite window before the hot air and equally hot waters took its toll on fish and fisherman alike.
