Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

After 2 days of cloudy skies, light winds, and awesome fishing a cold front rolled through the Fort Myers area last night. It brought a nice drop in humidity and pleasant early morning temperatures in the high 60's. The most noticeable change was the brisk / gusty NE wind.
Since the tide had been out going all night and the wind also started blowing last night I knew it was going to push water off the already shallow flats. Most of the remaining super shallow fish dropped into the potholes and adjacent deeper water by sunrise. We got on the water at 6:45 AM and started working the deeper areas, the trout had the same idea and we had consistent action on 1/8oz jigs with plastics worked just above the grass.
The redfish that have been a consistent bite for the last 3 weeks were not biting for us at least. I have a feeling the wind combined with the low tide moved them off the flats and into the mangrove shorelines. After working a few more flats the redfish were a no show so we decided to move to the mangrove banks and look for some Reds and Snook. We pulled up at the first spot and both clients caught a trout on the first cast which I did not expect, the wind must have created just enough current to move the bait and some of the trout to the bank.
The redfish were a no-show today after a month of great action, its one of those days when using lures instead of bait was most likely the reason for our lack of Redfish action. Since 99% of my clients would rather catch one fish on a lure rather than catch 10 on bait it was not a big deal. I believe that getting any post frontal fish to hit a lure is always a challenge, so when you have a decent morning its very satisfying.
This weekend looks like a return to stable winds and sunshine so get out there while the water temps are still in the high 70's. Take advantage of the great bite and perfect weather since the first real cold air of the season can't be far away!
