Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The good news is, its not snowing. Other than that, the weather has been very unFlorida like for the past couple of weeks. The bite has been tough with the best catches coming in the middle of the day under sunny skies. More cool weather is on the way so the pattern should remain the same for the next week or so. No worries though, spring is right around the corner.
The best bet has been going after sheepshead and seatrout. Neither of these species seem to mind the cold all that much and will continue to feed when the water temperatures drop. We've taken the small and slow approach to landing them. Keep the tackle light with small hooks and weights and downsize the baits. Small pieces of shrimp have been working best. The sheepshead have been in the 3 pound range and the seatrout are mostly short with an occasional keeper.
The redfish have been in hiding but will come out to play on the inbound tides late in the afternoon. Surprisingly, we've landed some big ones, but that is certainly not the norm considering the weather.
The nearshore waters have been very fishy but can only be accessed when the winds let down. On those days we've been getting a nice mix of mangrove snapper, flounder, seatrout and spanish mackerel. Shrimp on lead head jigs moved slowly across the bottom are getting the most attention.
