Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather has been all over the place the past week but it looks like cool, sunny days are what's ahead.
Redfish are biting well along mangrove shorelines in Estero Bay. Most have been on the small side with an occasional slot fish thrown in. Live shrimp, cut mullet and cut ladyfish are all working to get the bite. We've also had good luck with artificial flies and Berkley Gulp Shrimp on small red lead-head jigs. Got to work those slowly.
Sheepshead have become the major focus with the drop in water temperatures. They happen to like cooler water and have moved to their winter spots in the backcountry. Look for them near oyster bars and in deep cuts around mangroves. We've been getting the biggest ones in the creeks and bays at the north end of Estero Bay. Very small offerings of shrimp on number one hooks with a split shot seem to be the ticket. If that doesn't work, go with no weight.
Seatrout are on the grass flats in about 3 to 4 feet of water. Tie on an artificial shrimp under a popping cork and have at it. D.O.A. Shrimp in the glow color have worked best. Clear with gold flake are a close second.
The nearshore waters have been good but this recent cold front should stir things up a bit. Once the water settles there should be a good bite from spanish mackerel. While they aren't considered the top table fare in our waters, they are delicious when smoked. They also put up a heck of a fight and are pretty good size this time of year. Bright silver artificial lures work best.
