Estero Bay Redfish Bite Is Top Notch!

Capt. Rob Modys
September 8, 2010
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Both inshore and offshore fishing has been rock steady over the past week and the following week looks like more of the same. Good tides mixed with normal afternoon rain showers should put the fish in the mood for feeding, especially near the top of the high tides. We had a good week in the backcountry of Estero Bay with a fantastic redfish bite. The schools have moved in near the mangrove tree lines and along the edges of oyster bars. We've been using a lot of different cut baits but it seems that ladyfish on small circle hooks are working the best. Trout fishing is good on the grass flats. Just about half of the fish caught are in the slot and they are readily feeding on live shrimp under popping corks. Harvesting snook is officially closed along the west coast of Florida until September of 2011 due to the extremely cold winter of 2009/10 but keep in mind, you can still catch them, you just can't put them in the box. The nearshore reefs and rock piles are loaded with nice sized mangrove snapper along with a few founder and grouper. There are also schools of spanish mackerel near the surface in the same areas.
