Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report
Summer is over. Not really. Only if you live north of the Florida / Georgia border. We are moving toward Fall, with shorter days and longer nights, but here in Florida we still have a couple of summer months on tap. Don't put away those flip flops or the sunblock just yet.
The late summer fishing has been good with lots of multiple species in the backcountry. The weather has been all over the place but we've been working around it and it's been worth the trouble.
Some really nice size trout are making their move back into Estero Bay. The grass flats in 3 to 5 feet of water are the go-to spots as well as the passes on low water. Jigs tipped with live shrimp work best in the passes and shrimp under popping corks are the ticket for the flats. There are also lots of ladyfish and jacks in the same areas.
Redfish are biting well on both the inbound and outbound tides. If you are lucky enough to hit the water while the tide is going to high, combined with a south to southwest wind, you'll be in heaven. We've been getting 10 to 12 nice sized reds on each trip.
There are lots of sharks in the nearshore waters and they are hungry. Anchor up in the Gulf in 13 to 18 feet of water, do a little chumming with cut ladyfish or jacks, bait up and hold on.
