Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report
Sorry about the lack of fishing reports for the past 5 months. I have targeting tarpon since April and I don't usually write fishing reports during tarpon season. Even though the tarpon fishing is still pretty good, I'm now starting to target other species as we start to transition into Fall and then winter.
Tarpon: The tarpon fishing is still pretty good but the fish are on the move south. I've been finding tarpon from Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor all the way south to Sanibel. There have been lots of other species mixed in with them so the action is hot and heavy. Lots of spinner sharks, jacks and mackerel are mixed in with the tarpon.
Sharks: Shark fishing has been crazy good. Its almost been to good because the action is so fast that I can't keep enough rods rigged at times. Big spinner sharks, blacktip sharks, bull sharks, hammerheads and lemon sharks have been common catches.
Mackerel: Spanish and king mackerel have been pretty good. The kings thinned out a few weeks ago but there are still plenty of Spanish around.
Bluefish: There has been excellent fishing for bluefish in the 4-5 pound range.
Jacks: Jack crevelle in the 20-30 pound range running offshore but its been hard to get them to the boat because of the shark attacks.
False Albacore: Albies have been running with the jacks offshore.
Inshore: Inshore fishing for redfish, speckled trout and snapper has been excellent. I've also heard to good snook fishing using live minnows.
Fort Myers Fishing Forecast:
I expect the near shore and offshore fishing to turn on with a little bit cooler weather. As it cools the tarpon fishing will cool off and the inshore fishing for redfish and speckled trout will continue to be good though out the winter.
Target Species:
tarpon, sharks, mackerel, snapper, redfish
