Fort Myers Fishing Report - Don't Overlook Sand Trout

Capt. Eric Anderson
January 22, 2015
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

If want nonstop action and some great eating then don't forget about Sand Trout. They are a member of the drum family like the Spec Trout but are a silver color with no spots and much smaller. Yesterday I had a father and his 6yr old son from MN. The best way to keep kids interested in fishing is to make sure they get lots of action. I had seen a couple of huge schools of Sand trout on my electronics on Tuesday. These fish are tailored made for kids, all it takes is a hook, a piece of shrimp, and a bobber set to the depth your marking the fish.

Now all you have to do is cast, set the hook, reel in and repeat! They seem to never get spooky no matter how many of their buddies seem to disappear. I have no idea how many they caught and released in a 2hrs of fishing.

When you combine the awesome weather on Wednesday the 21st of Jan with great fishing action, it makes for a day to remember.

Sand Trout are easy to find on your electronics, just look for a massive blob that is from just under the surface to the bottom and look for some larger fish echos in the school. Drop a jig with a piece of shrimp down abut 4 ft for example and you should get a bite right away.
