Fort Myers Fishing Report - Get In On A Great Bite

Capt. Eric Anderson
January 20, 2015
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Take advantage of the opportunity provided by this weekends negative tides. Both Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th will have a decent negative tide. You will want to fish the first half of the outgoing tide in the afternoon. The last few days the fishing on the outgoing tide has been fantastic for trout and a few redfish.

Here's the Where and How to get in on this great trout action. The key is to find thicker grass patches on flats where the water is at least 2ft deep at high tide.

Rig a popping cork so that the leader is just slightly longer than the depth you will be fishing. You can use either a live shrimp, plastic bait, or a gulp shrimp. Use a small split-shot just above the hook so the bait sinks slowly down after each pop of the cork.

The key in the dirty water is to pop the cork one time, and pause for a slow count to 10 and then pop again. You might need to experiment to find the pause that works, it seems to change everyday.

Let the fish zero in on the popping noise and see your bait falling before popping it again. Slow and steady wins the race and if you feel that your fishing the rig to slowly that should be about right. You can also fish a jig with a slow hop and pause retrieve.

Give this a try and I hope you have a great day on the water. There are a lots of trout on just about every flat so be patient and find the school then anchor and fish them carefully. Good Luck!
