Fort Myers Weather Is Hot and So Is the Fishing

Capt. Rob Modys

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Even though we are coming off the full moon the tides remain very favorable for the next week. With good moving water on both the inbound and outbound tides the bite should be strong just about all day in both Estero Bay and the near shore Gulf waters.
We were able to get back out in the Gulf after the passing tropical wave and were greeted with an excellent mangrove snapper bite using small live white baits on circle hooks lightly weighted with split shot. It helps to use a few of the smaller baits as chum to help get the snapper up off the bottom. It also makes them a bit less cautious. Mixed in with the snapper are plenty of spanish mackerel of all sizes so you may have to beef up the leader to handle these toothy creatures. Both Big Carlos and New Pass have been producing a nice mixed bag of fish using live shrimp on small jig heads. Snapper, trout, flounder, mackerel, pompano and whiting are all biting well especially in the morning before the heat of the day kicks in. The backcountry has been a bit quiet but there are plenty of jacks around if its action you are looking for.
