Ft Myers to Boca Grande winter fishing report

Capt. Scott Hughes
November 27, 2014
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I just got a reminder that its been over a year since my last fishing report. Sorry for the lack of reports. Its mostly due to the fact that I only target tarpon from April through the end of October and during that time I don't report on the tarpon because they are always around but you never know what they are going to do on any given day. Just know that we always have opportunities for good tarpon fishing when the weather is good for 7 months a year. The rest of the year I fish for smaller game like speckled trout, snook and redfish and I rest my mind and body. I also spend time fixing all the things that get worn out during the spring and summer.

With that said, tarpon has been over for almost a month now. I landed 3 tarpon over 100 pounds on October 31st this year. The next day a big cold front pushed in. It wasn't surprising that the baitfish and the tarpon took off after that. Ever since the weather has been fairly unstable but fishable most of the time. I've had some decent days on small to medium redfish and some good speckled trout fishing. The snook fishing is still good but the minnows required to catch most of them are getting harder to find. I've mostly been using artificial lures for the trout and redfish.

Fort Myers Fishing Forecast:

Expect the fishing for smaller redfish and trout to be good throughout the winter. Sheephead are also another common catch if your using shrimp for bait. I'm also catching more flounder this year but they are small. Last year was the worst winter I've every had on flounder. Looks like they are back but most are young. Maybe next year and the year after will be back to normal in regards to keeper flounder.

I've already started making a calendar for the 2015 tarpon season and I've sent out my texts and emails to everyone who booked last year. If you didn't get one let me know. I usually have all of May and June booked by the second week of January so if your wanting a date during that time start thinking about it now.

Target Species:

snook, redfish, speckled trout, tarpon

More Fishing Reports:

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
