The gag grouper is one of my favorite species to target. The reason why is how great it taste and how hard they fight. These fish camp out on rock piles and sunken structures ambushing bait as the current flows. Surprisingly, the grouper bite is going strong for July. Usually they move into deeper waters when the water warms up. My guess is all the bait on the wrecks with cooler water temps from the all the rain is why their hanging around. The gear we use is medium heavy to heavy rods with 4000-6000 spinners filled with 30-40# braided line and a 50-60# flourocarbon leader. A 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook with a 1-2oz lead and a hand size pinfish will entice the bite. When the fish hits just start pumping and reeling to get it away from the structure. Gag grouper is one of the tastiest fish there is and that's why so many anglers target them. Tightlines and hold on!
