Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

School has re-opened in our area and that means there is plenty of space on the water for fishing. I had a couple of days this past week where we were the ONLY boat on the water. Less boats, less fishing pressure.
The redfish bite has moved up another notch. Using live shrimp, pinfish and cut ladyfish, we landed an average of 10 reds on each outing. Working the higher tide was best but we were also able to do a little sight fishing around the lows. Artificial Gulp Shrimp and gold spoons were also in the mix.
The mangrove snapper are "growing up" in the backcountry and it's a good bet for dinner. We downsized to small circle hooks, with a split shot for weight, and managed to get some nice ones for the frying pan.
Small resident tarpon have shown up in big numbers in the back bay creeks and rivers. No, these aren't the seasonal monsters that show up in the spring, but they sure are fun to catch. Most are in the 10 pound range but we landed a few close to 30 pounds.
Sharks are still the main attraction in the nearshore Gulf waters. Blacktips, bulls, hammerheads and lemons are in the mix. Chum with something bloody and it won't be long before they are all around the boat!
