Hot Redfish bite in San Carlos and Matlacha passes

Capt. Ron Kowalyk
September 19, 2013
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Backbay: There a real potpourri of biters in the bays and passes. My crews came up with flounder, pomps, snapper, grunts, reds, snook, trout, jacks and macks. We found so bait thick in the passes that you could hardly lift up the cast net. Chicken or features, the brownies and shiners were the favorite meal for all the afore mentioned parties except maybe the pomps. You still have to find that nice salty green water to be in the bite though. Reds were still fairly active in the brown water feeder creeks as were the juvie snook. Fly guys came up with some fair numbers of snook in the creeks and off the beaches. There is a mixed bag of gamers around the oyster bars on either side of the tides when there's water sweeping around the bars. We found snook and reds bashing the herds of mullet just off the bars. Shiners under a cork took advantage of the moving water and produced even better than freelined baits, allowing for longer casts well off the bars. Reds are generally slot plus fish; don't forget your "Law Stick"!

The snook front is slow during the day on the south end of our region; better results were reported in Charlotte Harbor and the bigger feeder rivers. Nighttime is the right to yoke a slot liner in the passes and around the many dock lights, look to the form fro "dinner winners".

The passes are offering an "easy living" bite with snapper, flounder, trout and reds nailing shimmers and shrimp tipped jigs or a slow deep drift. We picked a nice couple of braces of fat sassy specks outa the passes on the incoming tides. Good Stuff All Around Guys!
