Hot refish, snook and trout action

Capt. Ron Kowalyk
November 21, 2013
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Backbay: Reds remain the top target for oyster bar and bush beaters. Nice upper slot fish are the order of the day all along our region, afternoon tides were best. Expert shallow water manglers yakked or poled the ankle deep flats at midmorning. The mudskippers found reds and gator trout whacking unweighted swimbaits, slow retrieved smallish gold spoons and floater diver flies (Muddler Minnows). The hot ticket was the topwater action, if you could find pothole critters or better yet schooling reds; look for the gangs of mullet, cruising rays and dimpling shiners.

The feeder creeks are home to winterover snook, most juvies and the the surprise slot fish. There are good reports of slot fish up in el Jobean, Redfish Pass and on the close reefs at night. Mixed size tarpon are buried back in the creeks and river with the Imperial, Estero and Peace and Myakka all worth a look see if you're up to that kind of stuff. There are bass, cichlids and some mystery fish way up the local brackish rivers; "Who Dat" fish ID contest now on going. Don't flush your pet tropicals down the commode! Walking catfish, snakeheads and giant Chinese grass carp are all available in the Caloosahatchee. Ask your local oriental marketer for recipes. I've eaten all manner of fish from Southeast Asia, just sauté the critters in Nuoc mam (Fish sauce) fermented fish sauce and hold your nose. The real stuff, it'll clear your sinuses if nothing else. Try it on tacos! There are some nice Americanized recipes for the faint of heart.
