Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report
I'm not gonna kid you, the weather over the past week was not the best for fishing. High winds and colder temperatures put the hex on the bite, but things are improving. The forecast is for better, warmer weather and that should settle things down a bit and help clear the waters.
The focus has been on sheepshead and seatrout, two species that really don't mind the drop in temperature all that much. Creeks and small rivers around Estero Bay have been producing both. The bottom in these areas is hard, so there's less chance of the wind turning it to mud and that has helped a lot with the bite.
Best tip is keeping your baits small and your tackle light. Resist the urge to to move baits too quickly and work them VERY slowly across the bottom. We've had the best luck with live shrimp on lead head jigs and also on circle hooks with spilt shot weights. Don't be in a big hurry to set the hook. Let them eat and you'll get more fish to the boat.
Look at the bright side. At least we aren't buried in 3 feet of snow!
