Lots of Action

Capt. Rick Featherstone
June 8, 2008
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer fishing patterns are in full swing. Tarpon are on the beach, sharks are all over, permit, cobia, and cuda are on the wrekcs. Lots of trout action in the bay.

Inshore / Backcountry
We are finding baby tarpon by the bridges up to 50 pounds are eating small live baits and dark color flys. Trout action is great with fish in the slot and over slot over grass flats on the high tides. Shrimp and plastic baits under "clacker" rig have worked best for us. Flys like a clouser or other shrimp pattern will take good fish as well. Most docks with moving water are holding snook and jacks.

Offshore:
Tarpon are on Ft. Myers Beach, Bonita Beach, and Sanibel. Most are from fifteen feet to twenty feet deep. They are mixed into the big bait schools. Live baits have worked best for us. Threadfin, pinfish, and crabs on circles hooks cast into the fish. Wreck fishing has been excellent with lots of permit ranging from fifteen to twenty five pounds. Crabs are the bait of choice. Cobia have been in the same areas. Fish from ten to fifty pounds. Threadfin's sight cast to them have worked best. Kingfish are still here in the smoker size. Not schools but a few nice fish on most spots ranging from twenty to thirty five pounds. Best bites come from a blue runner under a kite.

Have fun and be safe,

Capt. Rick
