March came in like a lion

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

March came in like a lion and hopefully will go out like a lamb. What may prove to be the last big cold front of the season blew through on Sunday and what followed were some very windy days. The fishing was tougher but it looks like we are in for another run of mid 80 degree temperatures and nice weather for the coming weekend.

Sheepshead were the focus during the early part of the week along the mangrove edges and in the deeper cuts along oyster bars. Live shrimp on jig heads worked slowly across the bottom worked best and would also get the attention of the occasional flounder.

A pretty good mix of ladyfish and jacks could be found in the north end of Estero Bay using popping cork and shrimp combos. Looking for the diving birds chasing bait usually lead to finding the fish close by.

The redfish action slowed a bit, due to the winds, but a few were caught well up in the creeks where the water was clearer. The full moon combined with nicer weather ought to turn the bite back on by the weekend.

Trout were spread out, but the ones that were caught were all in the mid slot range. Live shrimp under popping corks worked well provided the time was spent to cover as much water as possible in the area that was being fished. Setting up a drift worked best.

The offshore waters were pretty much off limits during the blow but the bite was excellent before the front. It should be business as usual once the seas settle.
