Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report
Sorry about the delay between reports but I wanted to make a couple of trips after tropical storm Isaac to see what the state of fishing was in our area. Good news! Things have recovered nicely considering we had five very windy days and quite a bit of rain.
It now looks like we are in for a bout of sunny, hot weather over the next week or so and that ought to settle us right back into a late summer pattern.
I fished today with friend, Capt. Alex Dolinski and we hit quite a few of our redfish holes with success. They were tucked up under the mangrove overhangs and ate live shrimp under popping corks. We also got a bunch of small mangrove snapper and lost a few fish at the boat. The cleaner the water, the better the bite, so we'd move from area to area looking for edges where the water was less murky. Worked well at each stop.
Just before the storm I had a great day of sharking about a mile out in the Gulf just off of Fort Myers Beach. We landed 8 blacktips to 5 feet and a big hammerhead on cut jacks and ladyfish. I'd have to imagine they are still around and I plan on finding out this Sunday.
If you're going backcountry fishing over the holiday weekend, look for the cleanest water you can find. The fish will usually move there to help them hunt for prey. Even a slight change will work, so keep you eyes open. The Gulf waters are no different. Settled, clearer water always works better than cloudy, muddy water.
