Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the run of warm weather we've been blessed with, it's hard to believe the first day of winter has come and gone and Christmas is right around the corner. The holidays are a very busy time of year with family, shopping and getting ready for the festivities. Do yourself a favor. Take a little time and wet a line. It will restore a bit of sanity during the hustle and bustle!
The fishing over the past week has been very good. From the nearshore reefs to the backcountry creeks the fish have been cooperating with a steady bite on both the inbound and outbound tides. The May Reef has a nice mix of spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, seatrout, flounder and bigger sheepshead. Live shrimp fished close to the bottom on jigs or weighted circle hooks have both been working. A piece of cut bait will also get some big gag grouper, but remember, season is closed.

The backcountry is jack country. They are everywhere and they are big! We caught a 15 pounder along with several in the 7 to 9 pound range using a mix of live bait, live shrimp under corks and artificial plugs. On a recent trip my anglers landed over 100 jacks!

The bigger sheepshead have finally made their move to the mangrove ditches and oyster bar points. Small hooks with small bait offerings are the way to go. They have been a bit on and off recently. We just can't seem to move to a solid winter pattern here in southwest Florida.... but I'm not going to complain about the weather!
