Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

There is only one other month during the year when the fishing is as good as October, and that's May. But May is seven months away and October is happening right now! If you like catching more than you like fishing, it's time to get off the couch and get out there on the water and enjoy some the the best action you'll find until next spring.
The fishing has been ridiculously easy this past week. Just about every cast, in both the Gulf passes and Estero Bay, has been rewarded with something on the end of the line.
The backcountry is redfish central right now with lots of slot fish in the 3 pound range. There are a few big ones near the passes and on the nearshore reefs and rock piles. Live shrimp or live pinfish have both been working well under popping corks or weighted just enough to get them to the bottom. Cut baits will also get their attention.
The larger sheepshead are showing up near the oyster bars, a sure sign that winter is right around the corner. A piece of live shrimp on a small jig head, worked slowly across the bottom, will get the bite.
Bigger trout are starting to feed on the mid Estero Bay grass flats and there are quite a few slot fish. Live shrimp under a popping cork or an artificial paddle tail shad will get pounced on.
The Gulf waters were a bit rough this past week with a passing low pressure system, but the passes were holding spanish mackerel, ladyfish and jacks. There's lots of action when the water is moving.
