Redfish and Snapper Are The Ticket In Estero Bay

Capt. Rob Modys
June 30, 2010
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

The redfish bite over the past week has improved dramatically around the mangrove in the back country but you have to wait until the tide is up a bit to get them to bite. We've been using lead head jigs tipped with live shrimp or free lined threadfin herrings with success. We've also been finding a few flounder and a lot of snapper in the same locations. The trout bite has been excellent but we've had to get into deeper water than usual to locate them due to the up tick in water temperatures. The good news is they are almost always slot sized fish once found. Spanish mackerel are in the near shore areas of the Gulf but it was hard this past week to get to them. The tropical storm to the south of us has kicked the waves up a bit so we've had to use caution getting out there. Snook are everywhere and eating well. The best bite has been in the morning along the beaches and on the near shore reefs. Oh yeah.... sharks are on fire! A little chum, a big rod and some cut bait is all that's required to land a big one!
