Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
March 1, 2004
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rain, Wind, Cold, and more Wind. Near Shore Report

Water temp has retreated from 71 last week to 64 this week. Yesterday (Sunday Feb 29th)Mike Mitchell and his son Mike Mitchell from Denver fished with me on a 6hr trip. They were the best from the very gitgo. "We having people over at the Condo for a fish dinner tonight so let's go catch some Big Fish." When a Guide hears these words, his/her stomach usually reverses itself kinda like shooting a free throw to tie the game with no time left on the freaking clock. We started out Offshore in 2Ft Chop.

Offshore trolling is history. Done. Finished. The End.

We trolled everything and scored nothing. This was 3-5 miles out of Bonita Springs. We had 2.2 seconds of thrills over 3 freakin' hours. The rod went off once and seemed to go silent just as fast. Mike and Mike looked bored, worried, and somewhat unhappy with Capt. GiddyUp. I decided it was time to look for Tripletail

As we headed for the swim marhers off Bonita Beach, I spotted a manhole size piece of plywood. I saw no "Tail" under the floating plywood and then just like that 2 TripleTail came floating up. Incredible timing. I directed Mike and Mike to cast and hit the board. As my shrimp were on the small side, I knew it might scare the fish less than a slash right next to it. Occasionally, I will have a good idea. Little Mike hit the board 1st (took Dad about 10 casts)and on his 1st cast. As the shrimp feel off of the board, the Tail attacked the shrimp like me going after Collard Greens. Inhaled it. 12LBS. The other fish (Mr.Dumbass) followed the entire fight about and deadeye casting Big Mike scored when he managed a cast within 8FT of the fish. Anyway, the Mitchell's were eatin' large tonight.

We took off for Marker 1 off The Lani Kai and scored limits of Spanish. No Kings or Cobia.

At the end of the day I trolled the Mangroves with some new MirrOlures. We had the inner slam in 45 minutes. Snook, Redish, and Trout. Both of my lures were slammed completely off but I know exactly what they look like. I'll get the catelog and be a share-bear. "GiddyUp" JB
