Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
April 4, 2004
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Windy but nights are calm. Fish are everywhere

King Macks: I loaded up on Kings on Saturday but paid the price for my success by NOT leaving until the wind came up instead of ANTICIPATING the wind would come up and leaving a little early. I knew better but it was kinda like hoping you didn't get someone pregnant. It is the analogy I could think of. My charter license only covers me to 15 miles out so I made the trip out to the shrimp boats (45FT) with my non-pregnant girlfriend. We dragged Mann's Stretch 25+ on Power Pro 12/50LB Test and could not keep perfect size Kings off those lures. We used Blue/Yellow. It was the only lure they would hit. Since they were hitting and just for kicks and giggles, we tried Yo-Zuri DD, Bagley, and MirrOlure but nada. Zip. Zilch.

When I say "perfect size" I'm talkin' non-smokers. We were fishing for eatin' size we could smoke instead of SMOKERS that would smoke us. Anyway, we maxed out and then went after PERMIT!

Permit were all over the place but they were busy doing something else besides eatin'. We threw at them for seemingly 1 hour and they gave me about as much attention as a woman ten times as better lookin' as the thing I'm datin' now. It must be communicated that we had no crabs and were throwing big live shrimp. Heck, I'd eat a big shrimp if it were thrown to me. Again, 45FT of water straight out of Big Carlos Pass.

Snook: The snook are on their way to the beach. Because of the high winds the best fishing is at night.

During the day the winds start to blow around 9AM so you fishin' has to be done by then.

At night try the Hurricane Bridge at the first ebb. Things are hotter than a fox in a forrest fire. A fresh you know what fox at that. Live shrimp free lined ACROSS CURRENT and DOWN is the play.

Tarpon: Tarpon are rollin' in and around Bunche Beach.

Big fish too. I'm goin' tomorrow morning so I'll let ya know.

Trout Fishing along the Sanibel Causeway is on fire. I'm not a big fan of trout to catch or eat but people pay me to catch 50-60 and that's ok with me. Every cast in the grass produces. One keeper for every 8 trousser size seems to be the general rule. Most of the trousser size are only 8-9 inches. "GiddyUp"

I'm booked through April 22nd so call me for something after that. "GiddyUp"
