Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Large Winter Trout are on the prowl in Pine Island Sound. How large are they? Hmmmmm. Fhuhe Trout. On a recent 1/2 Day Charter, Ted Crawford of Portland, Oregon scored 24" and 26" Trout. His wife Susan felt sorry for him reeling in 27" that was a skinny 5.5LBS on my IGFA Cerified Boga Grip. "GiddyUp"
Trout simply dominate the winter action. My bait of choice has been a rootbeer colored DOA Shrimp. I'll see Mark Nickols this week at the Ft. Myers Florida Sportsman Show. His seminar is at 11AM. He is a very dynamic presenter and his seminar should be required by all fisherman. He will teach the proper Loop Knot for the DOA
He calls it the Canoe Knot (named after the Canoe Man). If Mark is doing a seminar, his lovely wife will show it to you as well.
So, where can you find the Trout. Try drifting the grass flats near Chino Island, Sanibel Causeway, and the Grass Flats off the A-Frames near the Toll Plaza. Let the wind create your drift and cast DOA Shrimp and remember to forget the crank handle and work the rod tip. If you don't impart a sexy move with the rod tip, you are wasting your top. Proper presentation is all in the tip.
Sheepshead: They is here in great abundance. I'm an Outdoor Writer for two newspapers so I can screw up on purpose. Yeeks! I don't fish for them but the action is fast and furious. I see people running great distances to catch S-heads and pass right by channel markers that are barnacle encrusted and have big fish hanging off them. This has always amazed me.
Grouper (Inshore). The action is fast furious. My favorite lure for this is the Mann's Stretch 8 Series.
My seminar at the Florida Sportsman Show is at 2PM Saturday&Sunday will cover all aspects of Offshore, Nearshore, and Inshore trolling for Grouper. I promise to put of a good show for you. "GiddyUp"
Jan 29th and 30th! Florida Sportsman Show. Lee County Civic Center. Be there to soak up a lot of great scoop.
