Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon lead the hit parade in SW FL. 'Poons' are showing up under residential canal docks, passes, and in the Gulf of Mexico. Joining them on the Hit Chart are King Mackerel, Cobia, and Tripletail. If you can afford 10 gallons of gasoline, you can have a blast and a half. Don't worry about the wind. It will be blowing at 20KTS minimum. Wind surf fishing. Hmmmmmmmm?
Tarpon: After the sun goes down the tarpon decide to party. Fishing at night offers countless advantages but it is not for everyone. I like the low risk of skin cancer at about midnight which is right around the time I'm scoring 'wanna be somebody poons' on light tackle. What a show these great fish put on. Jumps on 5-6FT are not uncommon but frequent.
The 'poon' lineman are assembled off Knapp's Point in 22-24FT of water. If you don't want your house painted 16 different colors on night, go into the fishing fleet with class and out with even more class. Don't go out of your way to piss people off by sliding into 3rd base with a triple.
My charters have been doing well fishing deep. Cut Spanish Mackerel. SSW Owner Circle Hooks (green package # 5)
Cobia: Female cobia (they must be because they are always late migrating) are showing up in good numbers at our nearshore reefs. May, GH, Helens, and Vanderbilt. If you can't remember to buy a chart and get the numbers, go for a walk on the beach with The Ball and Chain and pretend it is romantic. You will see the concentration of boats about 3-5 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. Radar Contact!!! You have found the reef system. Now all you have to do is drag some Felmlee weighted eel lures around. Betcha 5:1 you score a Ling!
Trout: I'll never rag on trout again. We have scored MONSTER TROUT down here. 6LB Trout. 2 pounders seem like minnows. The food supply must be incredible for our fish to be this big. These fish look like Silver Salmon!
Redfish: The reds are all over cut bait not live bait. This is a good tip as water tempts increase. Cut Ladyfish or Pinfish. The reds are in abundance around Buck Key.
The Today Show on NBC will feature a story about me on Wed or Thursday of this week. www.operationopenarms is what it is all about. Awesome Program! GiddyUp!
