Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hippee! Our limit of 1 Snook begins Feb 1st! How about that fishing fans? 1 Redfish. Jeb Bush proclaims Florida as the "Fishing Capital of the World." Jeb is almost as good of a Snake Oil salesman as a close relative of his (Hint: Not his Dad who is a Real Man and Warrior'). So Jeb, what do you say when Trout and Snook season are closed at the same time? My charter customers can keep 1 Redfish. Gee, How cool is that! Here's your report. I hope you like it more than my commentary above. "Fishing Capital of the World" What a crock of ....
Trout: The turtle grass beds are 'deader' than Jimmy Hoffa but Spotted Sea Trout are on the prowl. Check out the former fertile grass flats around the Power Lines around Chino Island or the Oyster Bars in south Matlacha Pass. Live shrimp are a total unnecessary expense. Go out to any bait shop and look at the color of the live shrimp. Then go match this color to the closest DOA Color. When you check out with your DOA Shrimp simply say, "Give me a small bag of frozen shrimp please." Tip the DOA with the dead shrimp (with an amount equal to the biggest bugger you've ever see) and you will be cooking on gas and saving a ton of money. GiddyUp! If you forget the frozen shrimp, go ahead a try a real bugger on that DOA and get back to me with your findings.
Redfish: Things with spotted tails have been on a very lite bite. Forget the live pinfish, kill the mutha, get him bleeding, and cast him out there. I really like this move on an INCOMING TIDE that is about to flood or partially flood an Oyster Bar. As well, NEVER EVER throw away a Shrimphead. Buy your shrimp heads-on and freeze the heads in a plastic bag for Redfish Chum Shrimpheads offer the perfect scent for Redfish and everything that swims! GiddyUp! Opps, try pitching some bait into docks. I like a Carolina Rig for this.
Snook: We should have a banner snook season this year. Try trolling Yo-Zuri Tobimaru lures in deep water residential canals. If that doesn't work, throw the lures by the docks and drag them by. The snook are hiding behind the pilings. They live and die via the ambush.
Snook more than any other species have survived the devastating red tides of fall 2005. They have also survived the needless destruction of our fishery by massive volumes of fresh water released from Lake "O".
BUT NEVER FEAR Fellow ANGLERS, US Rep. Mark Foley of West Palm Beach has a solution. I absolutely certain his solution will help the West Coast of Florida. Yup, I'll just bet Foley will lay the screws to the East Coast and really take care of us over here in SW Florida.
Yup. I'm simply steaming under my collar regarding these fresh water releases. Get in your boat and go look at our seagrass beds for yourself.. You will be fuming and you will understand my grave concern for our fishery in SW Florida.
