Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
January 8, 2007
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Unseaasonable warm weather has everything all confused. Tarpon are rolling, trout are biting anything, sheepshead are ripping off baits, and redfish are on cut ladyfish like a cheap suit. Snook are out of season but are willing and able to rumble around docks and bridges. Let's take a closer look.

The 1st Dock at the entrance of Tarpon Bay is "On Fire." Sure the old man will come out and curse you out and throw things at you. He has accused me of being white trash, gay, and African American. I'm laughin' my ass off pulling out 20LB(+) snook out from under his dock. There are some monsters over there and the entertainment is priceless. My new secret weapon? Noise cancelling headphones. YEAH BABY! If the Big Snook are not under the docks, check out the white sand beach behind da dock. Think shallow and deep. geeze-louize, do i have to draw you a map?

Redfish: I have caught two big schools of Big Bull Reds while looking unsucessfully for Tripletail. I ain't gettin' no tail by the way. The Gulf of Mexico and PIS (Pine Island Sound) is filled with Red Algae type seedweed cooties. A MAJOR PAIN IN THE ARSE! So, here's the trick. Go try and catch Pompano near any Pass. You will catch Ladyfish instead. Take the Ladies to the Mangroves and commit Murder 1. Slice and dice the Ladyfish. Save 1/2 for bait and throw the other 1/2 out to the potholes near the Mangroves.

You will catch a bunch of rats and the occasional 23".

If I'm lyin' I'm dyin' but I ain't findin' no +23" Redfish out there. Of course I tell the truth about what I catch and maybe that's a personality flaw in fishin'. Anyway, little reds on light tackle is a GAS. My favorite rig? A Catalyst Model 10 and my new favorite rod. Blows G-Loomis "OUT OF DA WATER". A 5'6" light spinner from Rogue Rods (6-12LB) (www.roguerods.com)

Spanish, Bluefish, and everything else is out there. Look for the birds. Try fishing North of Redfish Pass for the best action.

Tarpon? Yeah baby! I'm on them but I forgot where. I hate it when that happens. GiddyUp!
