Southwest Florida Fishing Report - Bonita Springs to Captiva

Capt. John GiddyUp-Bunch
June 4, 2007
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

In the words of one of my favorite characters (Austin Powers), "Yeah Baby, Yeah!" Scoring fish in SW FL is about as easy as it gets right now. You name em' and they are on the bite. Monster Tarpon (none as big as the Tipples Tarpon), Medium Tarpon, and some of the small guys in the 70-80LB range. Tons of bad ass sharks are following the poons. When the wind lays down, it is literally life changing fishing in SW FL at this time. Water Temp is only 78 which leads this Fishing Guide to believe the poons' will hang around and maybe some are still on the way. Onward to the fishing report and as you know, no smoke will start creeping up your rear-end as you read along. GiddyUp

Tarpon: "Da boys are back in town." Believe it or not they have a hankering for cut catfish tails more so than choice live Atlantic Threadfin Herrings. I loathe freakin' catfish but if little tail turns my customers on, who am I to dare pass judgement? As weird as this might seem, the sharks pass on the catfish as if it were liver.

Schools of tarpon are Nearshore and Inshore. Knapps Point, Sundail, and "Around da Corner" are hotspots Nearshore. Inshore, take a look around Picnic Island and "B" Span of the Sanibel Causeway. Nice little poons' of 70-80LBS are rolling around in there. For these guys try a Pinfish on a float.

Redfish: GeezeLouize! Bulls are being caught seemingly everywhere. Early AM can be awesome on topwater plugs around Oyster Bars. High Tide falling is Prime Time. Cut Ladyfish or Cut Threads.

Snook: Snook are mating out on the beach and I try not to disturb anything mating. Geeze, don't even get me started on this one. You know the hunger you get after performing a serious mating ritual? (I can here you Austin Powers fans) Well, same thing for the Line Siders. If you know were to go (and yes I do) it is entirely possible to catch 50 snook in 3 hours.

So imagine the look on the face of my charter customers when I say we can't target snook because they are doing "the down and nasty" out on the beach. One guy asked me if we could go watch the snook mate. It was such a sick request I gave him $50.00 off my regular rate. "GiddyUp"
