Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snook and Snapper fishing is hot
The most consistent catches over the past two weeks have been snook and snapper. I spent four days fishing out of the 10,000 Islands and five days fishing in Charlotte Harbor since my last report. The winds have made the 10,000 a little more productive but there has been some good inshore fishing in both areas.
The tarpon fishing in Charlotte Harbor hasn't been good for almost two weeks due to persistent winds in the 15 mph range. One key to fishing for tarpon this time of year is flat calm water. The tarpon like it flat and whitecaps make spotting rolling fish a little difficult. Also, Charlotte harbor has been producing snook around the mangroves of both the east and western shore. Big jack crevelle can be caught along the man made channels on the east shore as well.
Out of the Marco area fishing has generally been very good for snook and mangrove snapper. The big mangos have been hitting small scaled sardines. We have been catching a couple of limmits on almost every trip. Most of the snapper are large 12-14 inchers. We have been catching them around the sandbars of Cape Romano, islands of Rookery Bay, and oyster bars of the 10,000 Islands. Small snook have been hitting the same baits but we have also been catching plenty of larger slot fish with live thread herring and spanish sardines. Most of the fish have comming from the outside points but some of the larger fish are in the channels that connect to the middle bays. Trout, redfish, spanish mackerel and jack crevelle are around but I have not targeted the trout and mackerel yet this fall. The redfish have come from around oyster bars on falling tides but they don't seem to be gathering in large schools yet in the Marco area.
The forecast is excellent. Fall is my favorite time of year to fish. Bait is plentiful, tarpon, redfish, triple tail, snapper, spanish and king mackerel, little tunny will make a run through our area before Christmas. Snook and trout fishing will be excellent for at least 3 or 4 more months.
Good Luck!

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
