Marco Island, Ft. Myers & Boca Grande

Capt. Scott Hughes
December 2, 2004
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late November/December Report

Redfish: Sight fishing for redfish has been excellent in Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. Check areas that have heavy grass and are exposed during winter low tides. The best fishing will be during the rising tide. Soft plastics, flies and live shrimp have been working the best.

Snook: Snook fishing in the 10,000 Islands is still going pretty good. The fish have moved mostly into the brackish rivers. There are still a few on the outer islands but not as many as there was a few weeks ago. Potholes in Pine Island and Tampa Bay are holding snook as well. Live sardines and plastic jerk baits have been working well.

Trout: Trout are moving into the deeper runs and will congragate in the deep sand holes the colder the water gets. Fish jigs and shrimp very slow on the bottom. Remember that trout season is closed until Janurary 1st.

Mackerel: Spanish mackerel are all over the outside from Ft Myers to Marco Island. Jigs, live sardines, and spoons have been taking mackerel up to 30-inches. Look for birds from 1-3 miles offshore.

Pompano: Pompano are starting to make a good showing around Marco Island. Jigs have been catching a few limits for Capt. Stacy Mullendore. Tipping with shrimp will usually make a difference between a limit or not.

Jacks: Jacks from 5-20 pounds are everywhere from Tampa Bay to Everglades City. Live bait, jerk baits, top water, it doesn't matter. Chumming with livies will help fool them into taking a fly.

Good Luck!

Capt. Scott Hughes

More Fishing Reports:

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
