Marco Island, Ft. Myers & Boca Grande

Capt. Scott Hughes
February 1, 2007
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Reds, sheephead and bass

No, I'm not catching bass in saltwater but I am cathing bass. Bass fishing in the Everglades is still very good if you can get to the best fihing grounds. The water is down and the fish have been concentrated in the canals. These fish are not used to fishing pressure so they'll eat almost anything. I usually use soft plastic flukes or Texas rigged plastic worms.

In the saltwater, I'm mostly tareting redfish and speckled trout. The trout fishing is not as good as years past but is good enough to get a limit or two. Fishing for smaller redfish has been the bulk of my fishing the past few months. I have been using a variety of soft plastic lures including tubes, flukes, shad tails and shrimp. I've located a number of pockets that have been holding decent sized snook which is uncommon for the area that i've been fishing. They have been hitting a soft plastic "goby" lure.

The forecast for the next few weeks should be similar. Most of February is fishing for redfish, specks and snook. Bigger redfish should become more common as the water warms near the end of this month. Snook fishing will get much better as the baitfish start to show up on the flats.

Good Luck,

Capt. Scott Hughes

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
